Any fans of sustainable lifestyle here? We would like to introduce you to a guide on how to do your grocery shopping without any packaging and give you recommendations for some zero-waste shops in Brno. In addition, every holder of an ESN card will get 5 % off his purchase in one of these shops.

 

You must have already heard about how harmful plastic waste could be to nature, animals and also us, human beings. The amount of plastic waste is still increasing, we are not managing to recycle it all and much of it ends up in the oceans. The solution to this issue could be zero-waste shops, where you can buy everything from pasta, legumes, nuts, dried fruit to cookies, chocolate, washing gel or tofu without any plastic packaging.

 

Zero-waste shopping could sound like a big deal, but it isn’t at all…let me show you that. Before going grocery shopping, always remember to take some empty jars, reusable plastic boxes or paper bags with you. Once you come to a zero-waste shop, firstly weigh all of your empty containers/bags. There is always a scale and some white stickers, on which you can write the weights of the containers/bags. As soon as you do this, fill in your containers with whatever you like. Once you are done with your shopping, go to the cash desk. The shop assistant will weigh all of your groceries and deduct the weight of your containers/bags, so don’t worry…you won’t pay anything more than the groceries themselves. Even the zero-waste shops accept credit cards these days, so you don’t have to carry any cash with you.

 

And that’s it! Well done! But before you go for your first fully zero-waste grocery shopping, I have two tips for you:

  • Don’t panic if you forget to take some containers or bags with you. In every zero-waste shop, they always have some spare jars or paper bags. So feel free to take them.
  • If you for example struggle with the scale or have any questions about allergens of some product, don’t hesitate to ask the staff! The shop assistants in a zero-waste shop are always very kind and they can speak in English.
